Shortened rows are rowswhich are not knitted entirely, so as to give the knitting a curved or oblique shape by knitting more rows on one side of the work than on the other.
They can be done on one side of the work or both sides and create gentle slopes, as opposed to the notched edges achieved by casting off sets of stitches.
The indication to turn the work during the row means that the stitches remaining on the left needle should not be knitted.
To avoid forming a holeafter turning the work: slip the first stitch from the left needle onto the right needle without knitting it, taking it as if to purl it, the yarn being on the wrong side of the work, then knit the other stitches normally.
