Selvedge stitches are the stitches at the edge of a piece of work.

In works to be assembledThey are used for seams. To create beautiful selvedges, always knit the first stitch at the edge of your knitting slightly tight, as selvedge stitches often tend to loosen.

In a sweater, they will be hidden once the seams are done.

For beautiful edges on a scarf, you can slip the first stitch as if to purl it, then knit the last stitch of the row normally. Knit the edge stitches in the same way on all rows.
