Cables are made by knitting crossed stitches.
Small cables of 2 stitchesknit very easily and do not require a cable needle.
2 crossed stitches to the right:Knit the second stitch on the left needle from the front, then knit the first stitch normally. Drop the two stitches together.
2 crossed stitches to the left:Knit the second stitch on the left needle from behind, then knit the first stitch normally. Drop the two stitches together.
A cable of 3 or more stitches requires an auxiliary needle, also called a cable needle.
EXAMPLE: 4-stitch cable
4 crossed stitches to the left:
Slip the first 2 stitches onto a cable needle in front of the work, knit the next 2 stitches, return the 2 stitches from the cable needle to the left needle and knit them.
4 crossed stitches to the right:
Slip the first 2 stitches onto a cable needle behind the work, knit the next 2 stitches, return the 2 stitches from the cable needle to the left needle and knit them.
